The World's Chronicles
Poetry and Song
In Seldra and especially in the First Millennium, song throve on the breaths of men; those solitary, whose verses spread to their grandchildren and melted into society; those sung amongst groups who heaved their voices to the Spirits. Most of these ancient songs stil thrive today.

First Era (First Millennium)
Untitled
And we always wondered, wondered how
The earth hid beneath its furrowed brow
All the mysteries of the land
And held within One's caring hand
Time would stop slowly, sand by sand.
And we would look out jubily
Out over the green singing sea
And we all had fire to our tongue
When we were forever young
It was put out before it stung.
There was fire in their eyes
But we could see through all the lies
They were snuffed out by the earth
And henceforth there was the birth
Of joyous singing, and great mirth.
And oftentimes we would go there
We passed through rain and hail and air
It passed through our hair, through our wings
And led us all to better things
We breathed the air of Queens and Kings.
And with the wind passed the sands of time
And like the sweet lemon, the precious lime
We reclined in the arms of the One we loved
Her presence was more than just above
And Her messenger watched us like a dove.
Thought to have been written by a group of wanderers, perhaps men among chokara.
Second Era (Second Millennium)
Song of the Four
Ring the Bell to summon the Gryphon
Commander of the Sky and Souls
So close to the Earth, yet far on the mountain
He lies within façades of gold.
Strike the Harp to summon the Gator
Breathing Grass and moving Earth
Aware of life that passes, and later
Shifting forth with massive girth.
Sound the Horn to summon the Wo
Deep below the ocean's head
She did from the sea sky bestow
And gives the earth water to be fed.
Beat the Drum to summon the Serpent
Giver of Light and Warmth to all
Within the Garden, he has repent
Withdrawn from the Sword and the Wind's squall.
Sung by people to appease the Spirits.
It didn't appease them all that much.
Song of Sun and Sky
There'll always be wind that blows
There'll always be grass that grows
There'll always be sun that shines
There'll always be moon that glows
There'll always be other way
There'll always be other day
There'll always be other chance
There'll always be other dance
Sung by opressed Canen in the era of their despute with Fenin. Verses are often repeated in varying ways and in a very uplifting spirit.
Third Era (Third Millennium, most recent)
Lonely Mire
Well the sun is sun
And fire is fire
Met a woman
On the lonely Mire
Told her to take me
Higher and higher
To the place where
Birds sing like a choir
This very song
Her looks did inspire
But inside the deep
She was a liar
Gave her my heart,
Said I'd say nigh 'er
Perhaps my eyes
Inspired her ire
Precious gems
I wished to buy 'er
This love I ran
Grew deeper and dire
I wished to take her
Higher and higher
But she left me there
On the Lonely Mire
De-na de-na,
De-na de-na.
Writer unknown, possibly Canan. Sung in a quick and amused spirit.
Inside My Heart
Inside my heart, there's a place reserved for one man
When we're apart, I think about you
Inside my heart is a well of understanding
When you come nigh me true, I will share it with you.
Inside my heart there's the stars the sky the flowers
Inside my heart, there's a place for you, too
A world apart, and centuries of kindness
Inside my heart, there will be these things, too.
Inside my heart, there's a place reserved for one man
Just like a dart, love pierces me, too
Inside my heart, I will always have tomorrow
Inside my heart, I will be there with you.
A popular song in Dogwood, especially of Mune's. Believes that her great-grandmother wrote the song.
